Natural Building

The Farm Community has numerous examples of homes and other buildings constructed with a variety of natural building materials.

Ideally, these materials are locally sourced, such as wood from the surrounding forests, straw from nearby farms, and clay from the earth.

The upper story uses locally harvested timber and round pole construction. A rubber membrane and carpet are the foundation for a living roof.
The bottom floor is built as a “cord wood wall.” The pieces of wood are cut to the size that would find in a “cord” of firewood. Poplar logs, the lightest hardwood, are filled with pockets of air, providing good insulation. A natural materials plaster fills the space between the logs.
A yurt was transformed into a two story home, using unedged cedar siding.
